Tan Chin Tuan Centennial Professors

In March 2005, NUS received a landmark gift of $29 million in cash and shares from the Tan Chin Tuan Foundation. The gift made possible key initiatives to elevate the quality of education and research in NUS. This included setting up four Tan Chin Tuan Centennial Professorships endowed at $2.5 million each.

The four Tan Chin Tuan Centennial Professorships are amongst the most prestigious professorships of NUS, established with private funds.

They are bestowed upon academics that have demonstrated an exceptional level of achievement in their field of study, and made significant contributions to the academic policies and programmes of their University. It is open to local and foreign academics, who choose to work at NUS. They will initiate and co-lead education and research programmes with faculty as well as initiate partnership and collaborations with industry.

Of the four Tan Chin Tuan Centennial Professorships, one resides with Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, one with the Faculty of Engineering and one with the Faculty of Science. The remaining Professorship is open to any field of study in the University’s 10 faculties and schools, depending on the University’s requirements.
